How to create an Office 365 public facing website using SharePoint Publishing

It turns out this is relatively simple.  The steps involved are:

  1. Activate SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure in the site collection features
  2. Create a document library
  3. Create a page you want for your default
  4. Then click the "make home page" button

Following is a link to an article, I wrote, with screen prints showing the steps involved.

Note that there are other articles on the subject.  They take a slightly different approach which you may find interesting.

How to change Microsoft Online Services ID

After purchasing my trial license for Office 365 I added a vanity domain per the instructions at the following link:

Add your domain to Office 365

Then I wanted to change my Microsoft Online Services ID.  This was accomplished, with some guidance from the Office 365 help desk.  Since I understand this is a common challenge, I have created an article detailing the steps involved.  The link is:

How to Change Microsoft Online Services ID

Following is a summary of the article:

After adding our vanity domain we wanted to change our Microsoft Services ID from ourname@ourdomain.onMicrosoft.com  to ourname@ourdomain.com   However we purchased only one licensed user so we were presented with a challenge on how to accomplish this.

The tip is that you can define multiple users and assign them the "global administrator" role.   The trick is that a user does not have to have a license assigned.  This means you can have two users assigned to the global administrator" role.  A user cannot change their own domain name property; however, a "global administrator" can change the domain name property of  other users.

Using Office 365 to market our SharePoint Solutions

We have moved Applied Concepts SC (our public facing website) to Office 365 and are very pleased with the results.  It allows us to showcase our SharePoint solutions as well as the possibilities of Office 365.   We chose the Office 365 for midsize businesses plan which has a reasonable price which includes Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Lyn Online, and Office Web Apps.   There is also even better priced plan called Office 365 for professionals and small businesses.

The benefits provided by Office 365 are significant; however, what we are most impressed with is SharePoint online.  As time progresses, we will add additional SharePoint Solutions to our showcase.  Oftentimes these examples will be based on our own use of Office 365

Note that this blog was created using Office 365.  We will soon be adding, via Office 365, the following to our showcase:

  • A wiki for project documentation
  • SharePoint Access Services examples
  • SharePoint Dashboard examples
  • SharePoint Excel services examples
  • SharePoint Web Part examples (using sandboxed solutions)

SharePoint 2010 sandboxed web part using MVP pattern

Following are a few links which provide significant detail for a SharePoint 2010 sandboxed web part using MVP (model - view - presentation) pattern.  These links were found in the book titled Design Solutions for Microsoft SharePoint 2010 (patterns and practices)

Please note that the reference implementation source can be downloaded at the following link:   SharePoint Guidance 2010 patterns and practices.

Creating a SharePoint external content type for an Oracle table

Recently, I was asked how to create a SharePoint external content type for an Oracle table.  A Google search turned up several questions on the subject.  Most of the responses referenced the following article.

Using SharePoint 2010 for software project management tracking

Recently I was asked for my thoughts about using SharePoint 2010 for software project management tracking.   Personally, I think there are numerous opportunities presented by using SharePoint.  For example SharePoint can be used as a central repository for stakeholders to obtain project status, cost, and budget information.  This will result in increasing project visibility and control.

However I think most importantly SharePoint offers the possibility of reducing the project workload while increasing productivity.
At the same time SharePoint offers source control, issue tracking, and workflows for the formalization of approvals.  This results in transparency and compliance with regulations.

The following link leads to a case study detailing the benefits: Volvo using Microsoft Project and its interoperation with SharePoint 2010.
Another great article highlights using Project Server 2010 with SharePoint Server 2010

Also, one should take full advantage of workflows, alerts, and dashboards from SharePoint.

Note that there are several commercially available project dashboards available.  One example is SharePoint Project Portfolio Dashboard from BambooSolutions.com

Another dashboard tool, which I like a lot, is PowerPivot for SharePoint from Microsoft.

SQL Server Reporting Services in SharePoint Integration Mode

Recently I had a discussion about SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) and I raised the possibility of using SharePoint for presentation of the reports.   Research found some interesting articles on the subject.  One article goes into depth on their findings that "Reporting Services in SQL Server 2008 R2 and SharePoint 2010 (with Windows Server 2008 R2) delivers significant performance improvements."

Integrating Reporting Services into Your ASP.NET Application

In a recent discussion about SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) I was asked about presentation of reports in an ASP.NET application.  The conclusion of one article stated ""SQL Server Reporting Services offers a wide range of integration points and makes it easy for developers to take advantage of the product’s comprehensive report generation, processing, rendering, and distribution capabilities."
